Therese Giehse was a German actress of Jewish origin whose career ranged from repertory theatre to major postwar productions. Trained in the 1910s, she joined Munich’s Kammerspiele during the interwar years and in 1933 co‑founded the cabaret Die Pfeffermühle with Erika and Klaus Mann, a venture notable for its political stance and cultural resistance to Nazism. Persecuted by the Nazi rise to power, she emigrated to Switzerland and lived in several European countries before settling in Zurich, where she was a central figure at the Schauspielhaus from 1937 to 1966. After the war she became a regular collaborator with Bertolt Brecht’s Berliner Ensemble, distinguishing herself in emblematic Brechtian roles such as Mother Courage and in other major productions. In addition to theatre, she appeared in numerous film and television productions from the 1930s through the 1970s, maintaining an active artistic presence until the end of her life. Her legacy combines political commitment, dramatic versatility and a lasting influence on German‑language theatre, acknowledged in posthumous tributes.
