Thomas Coville is a French offshore sailor noted for victories in major ocean races and for multiple single‑handed and multihull records. In his career he excelled in classic events: he won the Route du Rhum (1998) and the Transat Jacques Vabre (1999), sailed on prizewinning crews for the Jules Verne Trophy (1997 and 2010), and returned to the podium in later editions of the Route du Rhum. He also contested the Vendée Globe, finishing sixth in the 2000–2001 edition. A multihull specialist, Coville established several crossing records and 24‑hour distance marks, including becoming the first solo sailor to exceed 700 nautical miles in 24 hours (714 nm in 2016). In November–December 2016 he completed a solo circumnavigation aboard the trimaran Sodebo Ultim in 49 days 3 hours, a benchmark that remained until 2017. Beyond race results, his career blends roles as skipper and in‑demand helmsman on high‑performance projects, involvement in commercial oceanographic campaigns, and attempts at ambitious records such as the Jules Verne. Coville’s name is tied to the development of high‑speed multihulls and to the recent history of French offshore sailing.
