Thora Manthey Lange was a Norwegian teacher of history and languages, affiliated with the Oslo Cathedral School from 1938. Born into a family prominent in intellectual and political circles, she taught during a period of deep European tensions and the German occupation of Norway in World War II. During the Nazi occupation she became involved in the Norwegian resistance while her husband was in exile. Her clandestine activities led to her arrest: she was detained and sent to the Grini concentration camp in September 1943. An illness contracted or worsened in custody resulted in her being admitted to Ullevål Hospital, where she died in December of the same year. Her case illustrates the personal cost borne by civilians and educators who took part in the resistance against the occupation, and Thora’s life reflects the courage of members of civil society who risked their lives opposing the occupying regime.
