Tom Robinson is an English singer, songwriter, bassist and broadcaster, known both for his role in the politically charged punk-rock scene of the 1970s and for his solo career and radio presenting. He led the Tom Robinson Band (TRB), a politically engaged group that had success in the UK with tracks such as "2-4-6-8 Motorway", "Glad to Be Gay" and "Power in the Darkness." TRB’s early recordings were produced by Ray Davies and helped introduce explicitly militant lyrics into British rock of that era. After the band dissolved, Robinson wrote songs with artists including Elton John and formed the band Sector 27, in addition to releasing several solo albums, among them the successful single "War Baby" (1983). His musical career includes periods of financial difficulty, a temporary move to Hamburg and a revival in the 1980s with recordings and tours on the alternative circuit. Alongside his music, Robinson built a long career as a BBC radio presenter, hosting programs across several stations and receiving recognition for radio documentaries. He was also a public figure in LGBT rights activism; author of "Glad to Be Gay," a landmark song for the movement in the 1970s, his bisexuality and personal choices provoked public debate in the media of the time. Active in both music and broadcasting, Robinson continues to perform live intermittently and to present radio shows focused on new music, maintaining a reputation as an engaged artist and cultural communicator.
