Tom Whitlock was an American songwriter and lyricist, best known for co-writing “Take My Breath Away,” the Oscar- and Golden Globe–winning song performed by the band Berlin in the film Top Gun. His collaboration with producer Giorgio Moroder also produced emblematic 1980s film hits, including the lyrics to “Danger Zone,” sung by Kenny Loggins, and contributions to the soundtracks of films such as Over the Top, Rambo III, and American Anthem. Born in Springfield, Missouri, Whitlock began his musical life as a drummer in local bands and as a studio musician, while developing songcraft on the piano from his teenage years. He moved to Los Angeles in 1983, where he forged closer ties with the studio scene and began working directly with Moroder, joining creative teams on high-profile film projects. Over his career he registered more than a hundred compositions with professional societies, with recordings by prominent artists such as Bonnie Tyler, Michael McDonald, Diana Ross, and Ray Charles. He received institutional recognition, including honors from his university and a mention in the Library of Congress. Whitlock died in 2023, leaving a notable legacy on the soundtracks that helped define 1980s and 1990s pop culture.
