Tony Zale (Anthony Florian Zaleski) was an American boxer, a two‑time world middleweight champion active in the 1930s and 1940s. Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, he earned the nickname “Man of Steel” for his exceptional resilience: he was known for absorbing heavy blows and answering with relentless body attacks that wore opponents down until a knockout.
His reputation was cemented in legendary fights, notably the trilogy with Rocky Graziano between 1946 and 1948, considered among the most brutal and exciting middleweight bouts in history. Zale won two of those fights and regained the world title in memorable contests; he also had significant encounters with Marcel Cerdan and Georgie Abrams.
Known for his cunning technique and devastating body punches, Zale was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991 and appears on lists of the sport’s greatest power hitters. In 1990 he received the Presidential Citizens Medal, an honor that capped his sporting and cultural legacy in the United States.
