Tracy Chapman is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist who achieved international recognition with her self-titled debut album (1988). She became known for songs that blend folk, folk-rock and soul, notably “Fast Car,” “Baby Can I Hold You” and “Give Me One Reason.” Her early work was met with critical acclaim and earned her four Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist. A graduate of Tufts University, she began her artistic career performing on the streets and in cafés of Cambridge before signing with SBK Records. The combination of socially conscious lyrics and accessible melodies established her place in the music scene of the 1980s and 1990s, leading her to take part in events such as the Human Rights Now! tour organized by Amnesty International. Although some subsequent albums had varied commercial results, Chapman enjoyed renewed success in 1995 with New Beginning, which expanded her audience and brought fresh industry recognition. Known for her reserved demeanor, she received an honorary doctorate from Tufts University in 2004 for her artistic contribution and social engagement.
