Trygve Halvdan Lie was a Norwegian jurist and politician whose career grew within the labour movement and in postwar international affairs. He worked as an editor and legal adviser for trade unions in the 1910s–1930s, held local and parliamentary offices, and later joined the government, serving as Minister of Justice and, during World War II, as head of diplomacy for the Norwegian government in exile. In 1946 he led Norway’s delegation to the San Francisco conference and, by agreement among the great powers, was elected the first Secretary‑General of the United Nations, a position he held until 1952. In office he played an active role in key early Cold War issues: he supported the creation of Israel and of Indonesia, worked toward ceasefires in disputes such as Kashmir, and sought the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Iran. His handling of the Korean crisis and the Berlin blockade provoked Soviet opposition and raised questions about the Secretariat’s diplomatic effectiveness. The political tension between the superpowers ultimately undermined his tenure and led to his resignation in 1952. Lie is remembered as a central figure in establishing the initial practices of the postwar multilateral security system and collective diplomacy.
