Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier was a French mathematician and astronomer who specialized in celestial mechanics, whose career rose to prominence in the mid-19th century. He is best known for predicting, by purely mathematical calculations, the existence and position of the planet Neptune to explain discrepancies in Uranus’s orbit; this prediction was confirmed by observation in 1846 by Johann Galle and Heinrich d’Arrest. Le Verrier worked at the Paris Observatory, which he directed in two periods (1854–1870 and 1873–1877), and produced planetary tables that served as reference in the Connaissance des Temps ephemerides for decades. His investigations covered the stability of the Solar System, planetary perturbations, and the study of periodic comets, with notable work on interactions with Jupiter. In 1859 he drew attention by noting an anomalous precession in Mercury’s orbit, a hypothesis that led to the proposal of an intramercurial body — an issue later resolved by general relativity. Recognized by French and international scientific academies, his name is among those inscribed on the Eiffel Tower, and his legacy remains linked to the development of celestial mechanics and modern ephemerides.
