Valerie Kathleen Lehman is an Australian actress and director, best known for her portrayal of the ruthless, manipulative Bea Smith in the television series Prisoner (Prisoner: Cell Block H). Her work on that production from 1979 to 1983 encompassed 356 episodes and established her national and international reputation as a powerful antagonist lead.
Over the course of her career, Lehman appeared in numerous Australian TV series, initially in Bellbird and Tandarra and later in titles such as The Flying Doctors, Army Wives, Something in the Air, Blue Heelers, All Saints and City Homicide. She has also taken part in reality television and made brief returns to classic roles, maintaining a periodic presence on screen.
Her performance in Prisoner earned her three Logie Awards, including two for Most Outstanding Actress and one for Most Popular Actress. In recognition of her body of work, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2021 for significant service to the performing arts and to wildlife conservation.
Lehman’s legacy is linked to the creation of complex female characters on Australian television, influencing generations of actresses and helping keep local dramatic productions in the public eye.
