Val McDermid is a Scottish crime writer best known for the series featuring clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill and his police partner Carol Jordan. Her novels blend forensic investigation with psychological profiling, helping to popularize contemporary crime thrillers and inspiring television adaptations such as the series Wire in the Blood. A graduate of St Hilda’s, Oxford, and a former journalist with 14 years on national newspapers, McDermid moved from journalism into fiction with notable success, publishing several series — including Lindsay Gordon, Kate Brannigan, Tony Hill and Carol Jordan, as well as more recent series centered on Inspector Karen Pirie and Allie Burns. She was a cofounder of the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival and of the Theakston’s Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award, initiatives that became important fixtures in the crime-literary scene. She has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sunderland and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Royal Society of Literature. McDermid is also known for featuring lesbian protagonists and feminist themes in her work, and for public positions on feminism and politics that have influenced critical reception.
