Vannevar Bush was an American engineer, inventor, and scientific administrator whose work shaped the relationship between science and government in the 20th century. Around the time of World War II he headed central R&D organizations — first the National Defense Research Committee and then the Office of Scientific Research and Development — coordinating thousands of scientists on projects such as radar development and the initial management of the Manhattan Project. As an institutional leader, he served as vice president and dean of MIT’s School of Engineering and as president of the Carnegie Institution, and he founded the company that later became Raytheon. He held several patents and distinguished himself in the engineering of analog computers, including the differential analyzer capable of solving complex equations. Bush also played an influential role in policy: his advocacy for government support of scientific research culminated in the report Science, the Endless Frontier, which helped spur the creation of the National Science Foundation. His concept of the memex and his essay “As We May Think” significantly influenced generations of computer scientists and the development of hypertext and information organization.
