Vibeke Vasbo is a Danish writer and activist for women’s and LGBT rights. She became a prominent figure in the feminist scene of the 1970s by cofounding the Rødstrumperne movement, inspired by the American Redstockings, and by taking part in public actions for reproductive rights and women-only autonomous spaces, such as the Femø camp. Her life includes leaving her studies to work as a nursing assistant and later taking on unconventional jobs that informed her writing.
In 1976 she made her literary debut with Al den løgn om kvinders svaghed, drawn from her experience as a crane operator in Oslo and noted as one of the first Danish accounts to address the lesbian experience openly. Over the following decades she published novels, short stories, poems and essays, among them the acclaimed Hildas sang (1991), a historical novel set in seventh-century England.
Her work and activism are marked by the intersection of political engagement with reflection on gender and sexuality, influencing debates in Denmark about work, identity and civil rights. Vasbo’s legacy remains tied to lesbian visibility in literature and to the history of Scandinavian feminist movements.
