Victor Napoléon — born Victor Jérome Frédéric Napoléon — was a prince of the House of Bonaparte and a claimant to the imperial throne of France. The son of Prince Napoléon and Maria Clotilde of Savoy, he belonged to a generation marked by the fall of the Second Empire and the tensions between monarchists and republicans during the French Third Republic. He became head of the House of Bonaparte in 1891 after his father’s death, although some Bonapartists preferred his younger brother.
Amid the political instability around the turn of the century, Victor expressed a willingness to lead a possible restoration movement, even declaring he would attempt to restore the Empire if a favorable political opportunity arose. Exiled in Belgium from 1886, he spent much of his life outside France and strengthened dynastic ties by marrying Princess Clémentine of Belgium in 1910.
During World War I the couple provided humanitarian assistance to soldiers refugeeed in England. Victor passed the headship of the imperial family to his son Louis Napoléon upon his death in 1926. He is buried in the Imperial Chapel of Ajaccio, and his life is remembered in the context of Bonapartist efforts to influence politics in republican France.
