Vijitha Rohana (Wijemuni Vijitha Rohana de Silva) is a former Sri Lankan sailor who later worked as an astrologer. He served in the Sri Lanka Navy as a radio telegraphist and took part in operations during the civil war, being deployed to Jaffna and later transferred to Colombo where he served in the honor guard for official visits. On 30 July 1987 he became notorious for assaulting then‑Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi during a ceremony at the President’s House in Colombo. The incident, regarded by some as an assassination attempt, led to a court‑martial, a conviction for culpable homicide and an offense against a foreign head of state, and a subsequent prison sentence from which he received a presidential pardon after about two and a half years. After his sentence Rohana completed higher education, launched business ventures and sought a political career by standing in the 2000 parliamentary elections for a nationalist party. In recent years he has worked as an astrologer and again attracted public attention for predictions and controversies involving political leaders. His case remains linked to the context of the Indo‑Sri Lankan conflict and to tensions over Indian intervention in Sri Lanka’s affairs, remembered both for the act that made him known and for the legal and political repercussions that followed.
