Viktor Stepanovich Chernomyrdin was a Soviet and Russian politician and businessman, a central figure in the economic transition from the USSR to post‑Soviet Russia. Trained as an engineer with a long career in the gas industry, he headed the Ministry of Gas Industry (1985–1989) and in 1989 became the first chairman of Gazprom when the ministerial structure was converted into a state joint‑stock company. Under his leadership Gazprom established itself as a strategic pillar of the Russian economy in the 1990s, a role it would expand in subsequent decades. In 1992 Chernomyrdin was appointed Prime Minister of Russia, a post he held continuously until 1998, making him one of the longest‑serving leaders of the post‑Soviet period. His tenure was characterized by defending the energy sector’s interests during the market‑oriented reforms. He later served as Russia’s ambassador to Ukraine (2001–2009) and subsequently as a presidential adviser. He also became known for his colloquial speech and aphorisms that entered public usage. He died in 2010; his legacy remains linked to the management of Russia’s energy resources and to Gazprom’s political role in the economic reorganization process.
