Vince Boryla was an American basketball player, coach, and executive whose career crossed the transition from college basketball and the amateur ranks to the emergence of the NBA and ABA. As a forward he excelled at Notre Dame and the University of Denver, earning repeated All‑American honors and a spot on the U.S. Olympic team that won gold in London in 1948. In the NBA he played mainly for the New York Knicks, became a starter and an All‑Star in 1951, and posted solid career averages before injuries brought his playing days to an early close.
After retiring as a player, Boryla coached AAU teams and later took charge of the Knicks as head coach, guiding the club in the years after the Olympics and remaining involved in the organization. His time as an executive was the most enduring phase of his influence: he was the first general manager of the Denver Nuggets in the ABA and, when he returned to the franchise after it joined the NBA, was named the league’s Executive of the Year in 1985.
Known by the nickname “Moose,” Boryla left a multifaceted legacy as a successful athlete, team builder, and award‑winning executive, with a significant role in developing franchises and professionalizing American basketball in the middle decades of the twentieth century.
