Vincenzo Peruggia

Vincenzo Peruggia was an Italian worker known for carrying out one of the twentieth century’s most famous art thefts: the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre on 21 August 1911. A decorator and glazier, Peruggia had worked briefly at the museum, helping with cleaning, reframing and building protective cases for paintings—experience that gave him practical knowledge of how to handle and remove Leonardo da Vinci’s work. Taking advantage of routine and lax security—the day of the theft coincided with the museum’s weekly closing during the summer holidays—Peruggia entered wearing the white apron of the staff, removed the painting from its supports, took off its frame and walked out carrying it rolled under his coat. Initially hidden in his Paris apartment, the painting was only discovered missing the following day. Two years later he took the work to Italy and tried to negotiate its sale with local dealers. The recovery of the Mona Lisa, followed by Peruggia’s arrest, caused a public uproar and sensational press coverage, propelling the painting to even greater international fame. The episode marked both the thief’s biography and the history of the work, influencing subsequent security measures and the Mona Lisa’s cultural status.
