Vitalie Rimbaud (born Marie Catherine Vitalie Cuif) was a central figure in the life of the poet Arthur Rimbaud, known both for her maternal role and for her prominent presence in the poet’s memoirs and critical reception. Coming from a rural Ardennes family that had achieved some prosperity, she insisted on respectability and educational ambition for her children, placing them in reputable institutions and closely supervising their reading and conduct. Married to Captain Frédéric Rimbaud, she spent long periods effectively raising the five children alone, a circumstance that shaped her authority within the family and the public image of a stern, protective woman. Her relationship with Arthur became a recurring subject in studies and biographies of the poet: writers and critics examined both the conflicts and the bonds that shaped the young Rimbaud’s formation. Vitalie also played concrete roles in her son’s literary career: she contributed financially to the first edition of Une saison en enfer, traveled to London at Arthur’s request, and maintained correspondence to support people close to him. Her figure left an ambivalent legacy—both a promoter of family aspirations and a presence that literature has transformed into a biographical myth.
