W. Somerset Maugham was one of the most popular and influential British writers of the early twentieth century, known for his work in theatre, novels, and short stories. Trained in medicine, he left his medical career to devote himself entirely to writing; he gained celebrity as a playwright, at one point in 1908 having four plays running simultaneously in the West End. After 1933 he abandoned the theatre and concentrated on novels and short-story collections.
Among his best-known works are Liza of Lambeth, Of Human Bondage — often cited as his masterpiece — The Moon and Sixpence, The Painted Veil and The Razor's Edge. His short stories, collected in volumes such as The Casuarina Tree, were widely adapted for radio, film, and television, securing a broad popular audience.
Maugham was also shaped by war and travel: he served in British Intelligence during the First World War and drew on travels in Asia and the South Seas as literary material. His clear, economical prose ensured popularity, though it also drew criticism for a style some considered conventional.
His personal life was marked by long-term relationships with male partners and by episodes that influenced both his work and biography; he lived for extended periods on the French Riviera, where he maintained an active social and intellectual life. His legacy is that of an author with wide popular reach and significance in the English literary canon.
