Walter Robert Yowarsky was a professional American football player, coach, and scout whose NFL career spanned five decades. As a player he excelled as both an offensive and defensive lineman: he played for the Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, New York Giants — with whom he was a starter on the 1956 championship team — and the San Francisco 49ers. In college he played at Kentucky under Bear Bryant and was the MVP of the 1951 Sugar Bowl, the game that secured the team's nationally recognized title. After ending his playing career, Yowarsky coached lines and secondaries for several franchises in their early stages, including the Vikings and Saints in their inaugural seasons, and also had stints with the Falcons, Oilers, and Chargers. He moved into scouting in the 1970s; in 1977 he joined the Dallas Cowboys’ scouting department as the southeast area scout, a position he held for 23 years during the period when the club won three Super Bowls. Known for his long commitment to the game on the field and behind the scenes, Yowarsky also influenced talent-evaluation decisions and is mentioned among those who supported key draft choices for the Cowboys. He served in the United States Air Force and maintained enduring family ties.
