Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist, poet, playwright and historian, widely acknowledged as a pioneer of the historical novel. His best-known work, Waverley (published anonymously), recreated the Jacobite rising of 1745 and set a model for historical storytelling by combining documentary research, popular legend and Border imagery. Trained in law, Scott chose to devote himself to literature and antiquarian studies, collecting traditional tales and ballads that fed projects such as The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. Over the course of his life he wrote with remarkable productivity, moving from patriotic verse—by which he was regarded as the first national poet in his youth—to a body of fiction that made him famous in Britain and beyond. Politically conservative and culturally sympathetic to Jacobite causes, Scott reflected Scotland’s eighteenth- and nineteenth-century history and social tensions in his fiction. His collections of tales and his method of preserving folklore helped valorize regional memory and influenced subsequent generations of writers and historians.
