Walter Spanghero is one of the emblematic figures of French rugby in the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his versatility between back row and second row, he was a key player for RC Narbonne, the club where he spent virtually his entire career, and earned 51 caps for France, including 11 occasions as captain.
He excelled in major team campaigns: he took part in tours against the leading Southern Hemisphere sides and was a member of the France sides that won three editions of the Five Nations Championship, including the 1968 Grand Slam. His presence in the pack and his ability to cover different tactical roles made him a benchmark of French forward play.
Born into a large family of Italian origin and forged by farm work, Walter also built a business career after retiring from sport, running a vehicle rental company in the Toulouse region. His legacy lives on in the memory of RC Narbonne and in the history of French rugby as a robust player, a leader on the field and a symbol of his generation.
