Walter Winchell was an American journalist and radio commentator, credited as the inventor of the modern gossip column and a pioneer in exposing the private lives of public figures. He began his career in 1924 at the New York Evening Graphic and, from 1929, consolidated his influence at the New York Daily Mirror, part of the Hearst organization, with his column syndicated to thousands of U.S. newspapers. In the 1930s he expanded into radio, hosting programs on networks such as NBC where he mixed gossip and news in highly rated segments. He was also among the first commentators to openly condemn Adolf Hitler and Nazi sympathizers in the United States, a stance that gained prominence with America’s entry into World War II. During and after the war he remained a visible editorial presence, but his prestige declined in subsequent decades; the closure of the Daily Mirror and personal tragedies, including his son’s suicide, marked his retreat from the spotlight. He later worked as the narrator of the television series The Untouchables, his best-known television role. He died in 1972 at age 74 of prostate cancer, leaving an ambiguous legacy: a pioneer of celebrity journalism and a central figure in the rise of modern sensationalist journalism.
