Wayne Bertram Williams is an American convicted of homicide whose 1982 convictions for two 1981 murders in Atlanta resulted in life sentences. He was a central figure in the investigations known as the Atlanta murders (1979–1981), but was tried and convicted only for the killings of Nathaniel Cater and Jimmy Ray Payne, although authorities attributed dozens of other deaths in that period to him. Raised in the Dixie Hills community of Atlanta, Williams worked in radio and the music industry before becoming the focus of the investigations. At trial, forensic fiber evidence and witness testimony linked items from his home and car to victims, and inconsistencies in his statements contributed to the conviction. He has consistently denied involvement and alleged that potential other suspects were overlooked for sociopolitical reasons. For decades there has been controversy over the extent of Williams’s responsibility and over how the investigations were conducted; public figures and victims’ relatives have questioned the conclusions and called for case reopenings. Appeals and requests for a new trial were denied, and Williams serves his sentence in a state prison, remaining a divisive figure in Atlanta’s criminal and social history.
