Werner Schroeter was a German filmmaker, screenwriter and opera director whose work was noted for its lavish stylistic production and the tension between the avant-garde and art cinema. He began in the underground circuit in 1967 and early on won a cult following and festival acclaim; his film Palermo oder Wolfsburg won the Golden Bear in Berlin, and Malina (1990), a literary adaptation starring Isabelle Huppert, received the Deutscher Filmpreis in gold. Recognized by Rainer Werner Fassbinder as a significant influence on German cinema, Schroeter moved between experimental shorts and feature-length “total cinema” works, often produced by an experimental television department that enabled controversial projects such as Salome and Macbeth. His narratives blend operatic and pop references, using images and sound in a highly dramatic way. In addition to directing, he worked as a producer, cinematographer, editor and occasional actor — collaborating with performers such as Magdalena Montezuma, Bulle Ogier and Isabelle Huppert — and also worked in theatre and opera, earning recognition on the European stage. He made politically critical documentaries and left a body of artistic photography. In 2016 he was posthumously awarded the Traetta Prize for his work recovering the roots of European music.
