Werner von Siemens was a German inventor, entrepreneur and industrial leader whose work in the 19th century helped shape modern electrical engineering. With Johann Georg Halske he founded the company that became Siemens AG, and he became known for inventing the pointer telegraph and developing long‑distance telegraph lines across Europe, as well as for participating in the installation of international networks and submarine cables.

On the technical side, his discovery of the dynamo‑electric principle in 1866 paved the way for practical electricity generation, and Siemens was responsible for pioneering implementations such as the first electric railway, the first electric tram and the first electric elevator. He also introduced devices like the selenium photometer and contributed to advances in electric generators.

Beyond his industrial activity, he played a public role: he sat in the Prussian assembly and supported the institutionalization of electrical engineering, taking part in the founding of technical associations and the Physikalisch‑Technische Reichsanstalt. His career left a lasting technical and institutional legacy, symbolized by the adoption of his surname as the unit of electrical conductance in the International System.
