Willem Johannes Theodorus Kloos was a Dutch poet and intellectual, a central figure of the literary movement known as the Tachtigers (the Eighties Movement). Trained in classical philology, he rose to prominence by advocating a poetry defined by personal expression and an inseparable fusion of form and content, summed up in his dictum that art is the most personal expression of the most personal emotion. In 1885 he co-founded the review De Nieuwe Gids, from which he promoted his aesthetic and published many sonnets now regarded as his masterpieces. Those poems, heavily influenced by Shelley in the 1880s, probe states of mind and intimate imagery, helping to renew Dutch poetry by opposing the moralizing and conventional models of the previous generation. Kloos also worked as a literary critic and editor, engaging in controversies that challenged the conservative criticism of his day. In subsequent years he faced internal resistance within the movement and personal difficulties, but remained true to his aesthetic principles. His work received belated recognition, including prizes and an honorary doctorate, and remains significant for its defense of aesthetic individualism and the formal quality of his sonnets.
