William Cameron “Willie” McCool was a U.S. Navy officer, test pilot, aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut, known as the pilot of the Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-107. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with master’s degrees in Computer Science and Aeronautical Engineering, he built a career as a naval aviator and test pilot, logging more than 2,800 flight hours and extensive experience in carrier operations and avionics and structural fatigue testing. Selected by NASA in 1996, McCool worked on computer support and on upgrades to the shuttle cockpit before being assigned as pilot of STS-107. The mission, dedicated entirely to scientific research, carried out about 80 experiments during nearly 16 days in orbit, during which McCool played a central role in flight and cabin operations. On February 1, 2003, the mission ended tragically when Columbia broke apart during reentry, killing the entire crew. McCool was posthumously awarded several honors, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and his name has been commemorated in numerous posthumous tributes: lunar craters and Martian formations, an asteroid, and educational institutions and memorials that preserve his legacy in aviation and space exploration.
