William Nicol Burns (1791–1872) was a Scottish army officer whose career was primarily in the service of the East India Company. Educated in Dumfries and at the charity school Christ’s Hospital, he entered military life through the patronage of influential sponsors and trained at the Addiscombe military seminary. He served in India, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 7th Madras Native Infantry, took part in operations connected to the Third Maratha War, and joined the Commissariat Department before retiring in 1843. Family background and connections shaped his public life: he was a son of the poet Robert Burns and took on financial responsibilities supporting his mother, replacing a brother in the annual payment of a pension. He married Catherine Adelaide Crone in 1824; she died in 1841, and the couple had no children. After retirement he returned to Britain and lived in Cheltenham with his brother James Glencairn and nieces. In 1844 he took part in public commemorations in Ayr as one of the poet’s three surviving sons. He bequeathed to the National Portrait Gallery of Scotland a portrait he had inherited from his mother and was buried in the family mausoleum in Dumfries, where his memory remains tied both to his military career and his famous literary parentage.
