William Petty was a 17th‑century English economist, scientist, and thinker recognized as a pioneer of political economy. Trained in medicine and influenced by Hobbes and Bacon, he became known for applying quantitative methods—which he called "political arithmetic"—to the study of public wealth, anticipating concepts such as the velocity of money and the role of transactions in macroeconomic equilibrium.
Also active in anatomy and the natural sciences, Petty accumulated wealth and property during the campaigns in Ireland under Cromwell’s government, and retained a position of prestige even after the Restoration, being knighted by Charles II. He spent much of his later years in Ireland, devoting himself to studies in the social sciences.
His principal works, including Treatise of Taxes and Contributions and Political Arithmetick, address taxation, national wealth, the money supply, value, and international trade. A proponent of a tempered laissez‑faire, Petty advocated proportional taxation and improved public statistics. His work established methodological foundations that influenced the subsequent development of economic theory.
