Wilma Rudolph was an American sprinter who became an international athletics icon by overcoming childhood polio to win titles and set world records in the 1950s and 1960s. First noticed for her talent as a young athlete in Clarksville, Tennessee, she won a bronze medal in the 4×100 m relay at the 1956 Games and rose to worldwide prominence at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where she won three gold medals — in the 100 m, 200 m, and 4×100 m — becoming the first American woman to win three Olympic golds in track and field at a single Games. With extensive television coverage, Rudolph was billed as “the fastest woman in the world” at the time and became one of the few Black athletes with major international visibility, alongside contemporaries such as Cassius Clay. Her success raised the profile of women’s sport in the United States and inspired generations of Black athletes and women. Retiring in 1962 while still a world record holder, she earned a degree in education from Tennessee State University and worked as a teacher and coach. Her legacy is preserved in films, publications, and public tributes that recognize both her sporting achievements and her symbolic role in advancing civil rights and women’s rights.
