Yasuhiro Nakasone was a prominent Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 1982 to 1987. A leading figure on the conservative wing, he became known for neoliberal‑inspired economic reforms, notably the privatization of major state‑owned enterprises such as the Japan National Railways and the telecommunications sector, and for rejecting Keynesian policies in favor of market‑oriented measures. In foreign affairs, Nakasone cultivated close ties with the United States and advocated a robust defense posture, increasing military budgets and adopting a pro‑Western rhetoric that aligned him with leaders such as Ronald Reagan. His visits to the Yasukuni Shrine provoked public controversy. With a long public career, he graduated from the Imperial University of Tokyo, served in the navy during the war and entered the Diet in 1947. Before heading the government, he held key posts in the Defense, International Trade and Industry, and Administration ministries. After leaving the premiership, his career was shaken by investigations related to the Recruit scandal, which reduced the influence of his faction within the LDP; he retired from politics in 2003. His legacy combines lasting economic reforms with a conservative stance on defense and national memory.
