Yigal Amir is the Israeli convicted of the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on November 4, 1995, at the end of a rally in support of the Oslo Accords. Then a law student, Amir shot Rabin and wounded a bodyguard; he was tried, convicted of murder, and sentenced to life imprisonment plus additional years for injury and conspiracy. Born into an Orthodox Yemeni family in Herzliya, he took part in religious studies and performed military service in a hesder unit, as well as participating in activities of the religious Zionist youth movement. In the years before the crime he became known for activism against the Oslo Accords, organizing protests and working among settlers, especially in Hebron. The assassination had major political and social repercussions in Israel: it sparked debates about the extremes of political radicalism, led to passage of a law preventing presidential pardons for those who commit crimes against prime ministers, and kept Amir as a focal figure in campaigns by right‑wing groups demanding his release. Security services consider him an ongoing threat. At trial, the defense argued religious motivations, a claim the judges rejected, saying it represented a cynical exploitation of religious precepts; experts concluded Amir was fit to stand trial and showed no remorse.
