Yitzhak Navon was a multifaceted public figure: politician, diplomat, playwright and author who served as President of Israel from 1978 to 1983. A member of the center-left Alignment, he was the first Israeli president born in Jerusalem and the first of Sephardic origin to hold the office. His fluency in Arabic and knowledge of several languages made him particularly influential in talks with Arab leaders and with Mizrahi and Arab voters. Before the presidency, he served as political secretary and chief of staff to David Ben-Gurion, taking part in significant decisions during crises such as Suez. In public service he focused on education: he headed departments at the Ministry of Education, led campaigns against adult illiteracy and, after returning to Parliament, served as Minister of Education and Culture (1984–1990), a period that included challenges during the First Intifada. Alongside his political career, Navon maintained cultural activity — he wrote plays, two musicals inspired by Sephardic tradition and works about Jerusalem — and chaired inquiries into sensitive issues, such as discriminatory medical practices. His legacy combines cultural engagement, commitment to education and a diplomatic role in consolidating contacts between Israel and its neighbors.
