Yves Boisset was a French filmmaker and screenwriter whose work combined popular cinema with a left‑wing political commitment. Active mainly in the 1970s and 1980s, he specialized in crime and action films that frequently exposed abuses of power: police and military excesses, everyday racism, media manipulation, and collusion between politics and crime. Trained in practice as an assistant to renowned directors, Boisset rose to prominence with films such as Cran d’arrêt, Un condé, L’Attentat and Dupont Lajoie, works in which he drew on real events and public controversies to build investigative plots and social critique. He also worked on literary adaptations, directing films based on authors such as Jean‑Patrick Manchette and Michel Déon. From the 1990s, after commercial setbacks in cinema, he moved his work mainly to television, directing TV movies and series of a historical and investigative nature — including pieces about famous judicial cases. The author of memoirs published in 2011, Boisset left a legacy as a filmmaker committed to democratic transparency and to exposing injustices in French society.
