Yves Klein was a French artist central to the European art scene after World War II, known for his conceptual and performative experimentation. The son of painters, he pursued a range of practices—from monochord music to judo—that informed his radical approach to art. In the 1950s he settled in Paris, where he developed his monochrome paintings and, above all, the famous intense blue he called International Klein Blue (IKB).

Klein pushed painting beyond traditional representation: he produced “Anthropometries” using models as “living brushes,” made prints driven by rain and fire, and turned production processes into performative actions. He also composed minimalist musical works and used photography as both evidence and conceptual gesture, as in Saut dans le vide.

Theoretically, his work centers on the concept of the “Void” (le Vide), drawing on contemplative traditions to make viewers experience the pure presence of the artistic medium—painting “absences” and proposing zones of immaterial pictorial sensitivity. In 1960 he was a cofounder of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. His output had a lasting impact on minimalist and conceptual practices in contemporary art.
