Abraham Joshua Heschel was a rabbi, thinker, and Jewish theologian prominent in the 20th century, whose work combined mysticism, philosophy, and public commitment. A professor of Jewish mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, he published influential books such as Man Is Not Alone, God in Search of Man, The Sabbath, and The Prophets, in which he presented religious experience as a universal human impulse and stressed the continuity between rabbinic sources and the Kabbalistic tradition. Born in Warsaw into a family of rabbinic lineages, Heschel completed studies in Jewish studies and philosophy in Berlin before emigrating to the United States in 1940. His personal experience during World War II—with profound family losses—shaped his ethical and theological outlook, oriented toward solidarity and remembrance. In public life, Heschel played a significant role in the U.S. civil rights movement, collaborating with leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., and worked in interreligious dialogue, including participating in Vatican II efforts to soften liturgical passages disparaging to Jews. His influence endures in contemporary Jewish theology and in religious activism committed to social justice.
