Adolf Otto Reinhold Windaus was a German chemist best known for his research on sterols and for clarifying the relationship between sterols and vitamin D, work that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1928. Director of the Chemical Institute at the University of Göttingen from 1915, Windaus carried out systematic studies of cholesterol, zoosterols, phytosterols and mycosterols, expanding knowledge of the chemical composition of these lipids in animals, plants and fungi. In 1931 he succeeded in crystallizing vitamin D by irradiating ergosterol, becoming the first to obtain a vitamin in pure form; that product (vitamin D2) and the subsequent identification of 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin as the precursor of vitamin D3 clarified photochemical mechanisms important in combating rickets. He also contributed to the synthesis of histamine and to the understanding of bile acids. His research had practical impact on the pharmaceutical industry: Windaus licensed patents that led to commercial vitamin D preparations. His scientific legacy lies in the biochemical understanding of sterols and the application of that knowledge to nutrition and bone health.
