Al Simmons (Aloysius Harry Simmons) was a prominent American professional baseball outfielder who played twenty seasons in Major League Baseball. Known as “Bucketfoot Al,” he enjoyed his greatest success with Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics, playing a decisive role in their World Series titles in 1929 and 1930. Noted for his offensive consistency, he finished his career with a .334 lifetime batting average and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
In the 1920s and early 1930s Simmons produced a string of extraordinary seasons: he led the American League in batting, total bases and RBIs in several campaigns, including 1925, 1929 and 1930, posting slugging figures and run-production totals that were rarely matched at the time. His ability to hit for both power and average made him a central figure in the Athletics’ lineup, and he recorded more than 100 RBIs for nine consecutive seasons.
After leaving the Athletics he played for the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, Boston Bees, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox, and he appeared in the 1939 World Series near the end of his career. After retiring as a player he also worked as a coach for the Athletics and Cleveland Indians, leaving a reputation as one of the great hitters of his era and a benchmark in American baseball.
