Alan MacGregor Cranston was an American politician and journalist, a central figure in California liberalism during the second half of the twentieth century. A Stanford graduate, he began his career as a correspondent and editor, gaining recognition for translations and critical analyses of the rise of Nazism before World War II and for information work during the conflict. His civic activity included leadership in the world federalist movement and early advocacy for nuclear disarmament. He held executive posts in the state of California before being elected to the United States Senate in 1968, where he served four terms (1969–1993). In the Senate he was a long-serving Democratic Whip, working on foreign policy, security, and social rights; he made a brief bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 on a platform supporting a nuclear freeze. His congressional career included controversy: he was one of the group known as the Keating Five, an episode that led to a rebuke from the Senate Ethics Committee. In retirement he devoted himself to activism for the global abolition of nuclear weapons and led organizations focused on international security, leaving a public legacy tied to disarmament and progressive activism.
