Salman Rushdie is a novelist and essayist of Indian origin, based in the United Kingdom and the United States, whose work blends myth, fantasy and reality and is often associated with magical realism. He rose to international prominence after winning the Booker Prize in 1981 with Midnight’s Children, a novel that established his literary reputation. His output addresses themes such as uprooting, cultural identity, faith, fanaticism and power, and includes notable titles such as Grimus, Haroun and the Sea of Stories and The Moor’s Last Sigh. The publication of The Satanic Verses (1989) sparked enormous controversy and led to a fatwa that forced Rushdie to live under prolonged threats, making him a central figure in debates over freedom of expression and religious censorship. Over his career he has received numerous honors, including membership in the Royal Society of Literature, France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and a knighthood for services to literature. In recent years Rushdie has remained active as a writer and lecturer, holding academic posts and residing in the United States. In 2022 he was the victim of a stabbing while attending a public event, an episode that renewed attention to the risks faced by authors involved in public controversies and to his legacy as a defender of artistic freedom.
