Marisa Pavan, born Maria Luisa Pierangeli, was an Italian actress who became a French citizen and whose career developed mainly in Italy, the United States and France. The twin sister of actress Anna Maria Pierangeli, she rose to prominence in 1950s cinema for high-profile roles alongside figures such as James Cagney, Anna Magnani, Burt Lancaster and Gregory Peck. Her most celebrated performance was as a supporting actress in The Rose Tattoo (1955), which earned her a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress; on that occasion she also accepted the Oscar for Best Actress on behalf of Anna Magnani. During the decade she appeared in studio historical and dramatic productions such as Diana la cortigiana and Salomone e la regina di Saba, as well as suspense and crime films. In the 1960s she returned to Italy, appearing as a guest personality on RAI variety shows, and she continued to work sporadically in television and film into the 1970s. Married to the French actor Jean-Pierre Aumont, she later devoted herself to her family and made increasingly rare appearances. She died on December 6, 2023 in Gassin, leaving a legacy as an actress of restrained expressiveness and a striking presence in postwar transatlantic cinema.
