Alannah Joy Currie is an artist and musician born in New Zealand, best known for her career as a member of the pop group Thompson Twins. She moved to the United Kingdom in 1977 and served for fifteen years as the band's lyricist, percussionist, backing vocalist, and visual stylist. As a co-writer she contributed to six studio albums that achieved gold and platinum sales and included hits such as “Doctor! Doctor!”, “Hold Me Now” and “You Take Me Up”. The group performed at high-profile events, including Live Aid in 1985, and worked with figures such as Nile Rodgers, Madonna and Jerry Harrison. In 1989 Currie also received a songwriting credit on the hit “I Want That Man”, performed by Deborah Harry. In the early 1990s she and Tom Bailey created the project Babble, seeking creative freedom beyond commercial pressures. She later returned to New Zealand and focused on glass art and environmental activism, founding the MAdGE movement against genetic engineering in food. Since 2004 she has lived in London as an artist under the name Miss Pokeno, producing work that combines political intervention, humor and social critique, and maintaining a studio at Doyce Street Studios Projects.
