Chico Hamilton, stage name of Foreststorn Hamilton, was an American jazz drummer and bandleader whose career spanned several decades of the twentieth century. Trained initially as a clarinetist during World War II and later refining his drumming with Jo Jones, he became known as an accompanist to major figures — including Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole — before taking on leadership roles. In the mid-1950s he founded a chamber‑styled quintet that incorporated instruments uncommon in jazz at the time, such as Fred Katz’s cello, and helped bring younger musicians to public attention, among them Buddy Collette and Jim Hall. The lineup and sound of the Chico Hamilton Quintet influenced more subtle, arranged approaches to chamber jazz, balancing improvisation with orchestral textures. Throughout his career he remained active as a mentor and talent-spotter, assembling musicians such as Eric Dolphy, Larry Coryell, Arthur Blythe and Steve Turre at various stages. His extensive discography, begun in the 1950s and continued for decades, documents a course of timbral innovation and rhythmic sensitivity, establishing him as a lasting figure in the American jazz scene.
