Charles Phelps Taft II was a politician and a prominent member of the Taft family, active mainly in Cincinnati, Ohio. A Yale Law graduate, he practiced law and played a central role in the 1925 municipal reform that established the city manager model, making Cincinnati the first major U.S. city to adopt it. A coauthor of the modern law firm Taft Stettinius & Hollister, he also held local public offices for decades, including multiple terms on the city council and a term as mayor of Cincinnati (1955–1957), during which the city was noted for its efficient administration. During World War II he worked in federal community service and at the State Department, and he was the first layperson to chair the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America. Although affiliated with the Republican Party in state elections, he ran for municipal office with the Charter Party, favoring pragmatic, nonpartisan governance. Known as “Mr. Cincinnati,” he was recognized for his civic work, attention to local social issues, and religious involvement at Christ Church Cathedral. His legacy includes institutional contributions to municipal governance, civic advocacy for the poor, and support for cultural and educational initiatives in the city.
