Leo Strauss was an influential political philosopher of German‑American origin, known for his careful readings of the classics and for reintegrating the Jewish and Islamic philosophical traditions into debates about political theory. A long‑time professor at the University of Chicago, he trained a school of disciples—the so‑called Straussians—and influenced generations of political scientists and philosophers with a method that reads canonical texts closely. Trained in the Neo‑Kantian tradition and deeply influenced by phenomenologists such as Husserl and Heidegger, Strauss became noted for his studies of Spinoza, Machiavelli, and Hobbes and for his work on Maimonides and Al‑Farabi. He argued that ancient and medieval authors sometimes wrote esoterically and maintained that politics and philosophy are intrinsically intertwined, though not fully compatible. His best‑known work, Natural Right and History, presents criticisms of historicism and modern relativism and revisits the question of the nature of natural rights through the lens of the classics. From the mid‑twentieth century Strauss became a central figure in the American humanities, provoking debates on elitism, republicanism, and the role of philosophy in public life, and leaving a lasting impact on the teaching of the great books.
