Albert Ehrenstein was an expressionist poet born in Vienna to a Hungarian-Jewish family who became a prominent voice in early twentieth-century German literature. His poetry rejects bourgeois values and shows a strong fascination with the Orient—especially China—a theme that recurs in later adaptations and prose. Trained in history and philosophy, he chose a literary career early and joined Berlin’s leading avant-garde circles, contributing to magazines such as Der Sturm and Die Aktion and associating with figures like Oskar Kokoschka, Else Lasker-Schüler and Gottfried Benn. During the First World War he opposed the conflict, publishing pacifist poems and articles; after the war he supported revolutionary movements and took part in Dadaist and anti-nationalist publications. In the 1920s he traveled through Europe, Africa and Asia, producing works inspired by Chinese literature as well as the novel Murderer from Justice (1931). With the rise of Nazism he was persecuted, his books were burned and he spent decades in exile—living in Switzerland, France, England and finally the United States. In New York he faced financial hardship and died in 1950; his work nonetheless continued to influence twentieth-century writers and was later preserved in archives and libraries devoted to literary memory.
