Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach, known as Albert of Prussia, was a noble of the House of Hohenzollern who played a decisive role in the political and religious transformation of Prussia in the 16th century. He succeeded as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order in 1511 and, faced with the Order’s decline and pressure from Poland, led the region’s most important secularization by converting the monastic state into a hereditary duchy in 1525.
The religious conversion took place under the direct influence of the Reformation; guided by Martin Luther, Albert adopted Lutheranism, married, and accepted becoming a vassal of the King of Poland through the so‑called “Prussian Homage.” As the first Duke of Prussia he established his court at Königsberg and promoted administrative and educational reforms: he emancipated serfs, encouraged local schools, and supported the spread of the catechism in German.
In subsequent years he founded the Albertina University (1544) and engaged in the theological controversies of the Reformation, siding with Philip Melanchthon against Andreas Osiander, whose influence negatively affected the final years of his rule. His legacy is the lasting transformation of Prussia from a religious military state into a secular duchy tied to the Polish sphere and to the Protestant cause.
