Albert Pitres was a French neurologist whose career combined teaching, clinical practice, and research at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century. Trained in Bordeaux and further educated in Paris as a disciple of Jean-Martin Charcot and Louis-Antoine Ranvier, Pitres became a central figure at the Faculty of Medicine in Bordeaux, where he held the chair of pathology and, from 1885, served as dean.
In research he was notable for studies on cortical excitation and the localization of brain functions, carried out in collaboration with Charles-Émile François-Franck, and for contributions on peripheral neurites published in a collective medical treatise. His lectures were collected in works on hysteria and hypnotism, amnesic aphasia, paraphasia, and the physical signs of pleural effusions.
Pitres also left an eponym in neurological clinic: the so-called “Pitres sign,” described in tabes dorsalis as hypoesthesia of the scrotum and testicles. His scientific and educational output established him as a regional and national reference in French neurology of his time.
